Trail Description

The Kayanberd trail is one of the most impressive hiking routes in Armenia, combining the magnificent nature of the Lori region with rich medieval history. The trail leads to Kayanberd fortress, situated on a high promontory in the Debed canyon, between the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Built in 1233 on the initiative of Abbot Hovhannes of Haghpat, it served as a strategic defensive stronghold. This centuries-old trail is a living witness to history; it was once traversed by the soldiers defending the fortress, pilgrims on their spiritual journeys, religious figures, scholars, and princes. It was through this very path that a relic of the True Cross of Jesus Christ was brought to Dsevank.

Technical Description and Guide

The trail is of easy to moderate difficulty, suitable for both children and adults. Access is free 24/7. The duration of the one-way route is 1–1.5 hours, and about 2 hours for the round trip. The trail is at its most beautiful during the spring and autumn months.

The hike begins at the crossroads of the Haghpat-Tsaghkashat villages. There are free and paid parking options available for vehicles. From there, walk toward the canyon, cross the 13th-century Jraghatsadzor bridge, and continue the hike above the restaurant complex. The route passes through a forest, with high cliffs on the left and the canyon on the right. Midway, you will see a private museum located inside a cave. During the hike, you will enjoy views of the Haghpat canyon and the Acher River, the Debed River valley, the Virahayots Mountains, the Zarni-Parni cave-fortress complex, and Haghpat Monastery. Near the fortress, the trail passes over rocks via stone steps. The main destination is the fortress with its high walls and powerful towers, housing the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (more commonly known as Dsevank).

The return is via the same path. If you wish to continue to Sanahin Monastery, use the Haghpat-Sanahin trail. If you prefer to start the Kayanberd trail from Haghpat Monastery, use the beginning of the Haghpat-Sanahin trail. You may also be interested in rock climbing to Lasti Ayr, the trail for which also begins near the Jraghatsadzor bridge.

Warning

  • * Please do not damage nature or historical and cultural monuments. Such actions are criminally punishable.
  • * Excavation work is ongoing at the fortress. Please do not damage the historical layers or conduct unauthorized excavations. These actions are criminally punishable.
  • * Do not light fires; the forest is in a fire-prone zone.
  • * There are no trash cans on the trail. Keep your trash with you and dispose of it in a bin at the end of the hike.

Safety Considerations

Although entry to the fortress is free 24/7, please be extremely vigilant.

  • * Visibility: It is strictly recommended to avoid climbing the fortress during dark hours. In the evening, the edges of the fortress walls become difficult to see.
  • * Height: The fortress is located on the edge of steep cliffs, with a precipice directly below the walls. A careless step or getting too close to the edge can be dangerous.
  • * Gear: It is recommended to wear hiking shoes, as parts of the trail can be slippery or rocky.
  • * Bring drinking water and food. At the beginning of the trail, near the Jraghatsadzor bridge, there is a water spring, which is occasionally non-functional.
  • * In case of emergency, call 102 or 911.
