Surb Sion Church
Haghpat’s Hidden Monument
Located 150 meters from Haghpat Monastery is Surb Sion Church, a unique underground structure. It is also known as Ararjadem. According to tradition, a church was established here back in the times of Armenia’s adoption of Christianity, that is, before the construction of Haghpat Monastery, which is how it got the name Ararjadem. The current building was constructed by four monks of Haghpat Monastery — Tiran, Gevorg, Andrei, and Daniel. This is recorded on one of the khachkars located near the church.
Architectural Features
Surb Sion Church is built of finely hewn bluish basalt. It has a rectangular floor plan. Cross-stones are placed against the walls and at their base, some of which bear Armenian inscriptions. The khachkar with an Armenian inscription placed right next to the entrance is dated 1005 and is dedicated to the most powerful king of the Kyurikian Armenians, David Anhoghin, and the first abbot of Haghpat Monastery, Simeon.
