The Armenian Church calendar has been in use since 553 AD, by the decision of the Council of Dvin. From that period, Armenians began to calculate their year according to a special Armenian reckoning, which is also accepted in the Armenian Apostolic Church. The years were recorded using the Armenian alphabet; each letter had a numerical value and served as a numeral.
